National Eye Health Week | NHS Eye Test At Home | Live-in Care

Sight tests in your own home

If you are eligible for a free NHS sight test but are unable to leave home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability, you may be entitled to an NHS-funded sight test at home

Did you know?

  • 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss, that is severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives. Half of this sight loss is avoidable.
  • A sight test can detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma, which can be treated if found soon enough
  • During a sight test, other health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure may be detected.
  • For healthy eyes, eat well, don’t smoke and wear eye protection in bright sunlight.*

The latest NHS statistics suggest that 75% of over 60’s suffer from visual impairment or sight loss, which negatively impacts their quality of life. Only 35% of over 60’s have regular eye examinations despite the service being free on the NHS.

As we get older our bodies naturally begin to slow down and deteriorate and we have an increasing need for assistance. Many people use domiciliary (home-based) help to assist with the day-to-day difficulties that arise from being less mobile.

For years many industries have provided home-based services to those unable to easily leave their homes. From mobile hairdressers and meal providers to healthcare visitors and therapists; services that allow for increased independence and an improved standard of living are ever more possible.

Home-based eye care and treatment

Community care opticians is a family-run company that has a well-established reputation as a trusted NHS provider. Anyone who may have difficulty getting to the High Street unassisted is entitled to free NHS eye tests. The community care opticians’ team comprises of experienced, friendly and professional opticians, all of whom are registered with the General Optical Council (GOC) and Association of Optometrists (AOP).

Using the latest optical equipment, Community Care’s optometrists perform eye examinations to the same standard that you would expect at a High Street practice. They can provide private or free NHS services to customers in retirement homes, nursing homes, sheltered accommodation, and hospices. Eye examinations for those clients who are less able to communicate are also possible and an accurate prescription can be obtained using equipment that requires no communication from the patient.

Caring about the community

At the heart of community care opticians’ training is ‘The Family Member Test’; a policy whereby all staff are trained to treat every client as if they were their own family member.

Community care opticians believes in a holistic patient-centred approach, enabling them to focus on listening to their clients and responding effectively. They aim to give the customer as much value as possible from their visit and as well as carrying out the eye examinations.

For more information about eligibility or to book an eye examination please contact community care opticians directly and they will be happy to help.
