Positive Risk Taking for Clients

Risk and reward: Positive risk taking for clients

At The Good Care Group, much of our work revolves around ensuring the safety and well-being of our clients. We take great care in minimising risks to protect those under our care. However, there’s another side to this coin—positive risk-taking. Sometimes, well-calculated and managed risks can lead to incredibly enjoyable experiences for our clients while helping them retain their cherished independence.

Positive risk-taking is an approach to care which focuses on what people CAN do, not just how they’re limited. Taking time to plan an activity with their carer and assess the risks and what-ifs can be a great way to help our clients regain their confidence when it comes to mobility and independence.

What is positive risk-taking in health and social care?

Positive risk-taking is an innovative approach in health and social care that shifts the focus from what individuals can’t do to what they can achieve. It’s about empowering people to take measured leaps of faith towards enriching experiences, all within a safe and controlled environment.

This approach involves taking the time to meticulously plan activities with our clients and assess the potential risks and rewards. By doing so, we can provide our clients with valuable opportunities to build their confidence and empower them to live more independently.

What is risk enablement in social care?

Risk enablement in social care is the backbone of positive risk-taking. It’s all about striking that comfortable balance between safety and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. We recognise that risk is an inherent part of life, but it doesn’t mean we should shy away from it. Instead, we embrace it with careful planning and the right precautions.

When positive risk-taking, it is important to consider not only the concerns of the client themselves but also those of their family and professional carer. The aim is to strike a balance between keeping the person safe and away from risks, while also ensuring some planned risks are taken to give them an enhanced quality of life and allow them to live their life the way they have always liked to.

It is in no one’s interest to put the client through any unnecessary risks, but risk is ever-present and, when well prepared for, measured risk-taking can go a long way to bring joy and independence to our clients.

Our goal is to enable our clients to live life the way they always have, without unnecessary restrictions. It’s about ensuring that our clients can savour the joys of independence, even in their later years.

Why risk-taking can be part of a person-centred approach

A person-centred approach lies at the heart of our care philosophy. We firmly believe that our clients should be at the centre of every decision, including those related to positive risk-taking. When clients actively participate in planning exciting activities, it fosters a trusting relationship between them and our caregivers.

Understanding the client and their life is at the centre of positive risk-taking. Many of our clients have lived incredibly active lives and it is important that they get to spend their old age in the spirit of their earlier years. An understanding of the activities people have always loved comes from a close relationship with their carer and family who know them beyond the medical understanding of the health services.

In consultation with the client’s GP, physiotherapist or other practitioners, the client, family and carer can work together to plan appropriate activities to make the most of the person’s abilities and experience while satisfying the concerns of all involved.

By focusing on our clients’ strengths and addressing weaknesses as they arise, we create a nurturing environment where they can make the most of their abilities. We understand that each person is unique, and their journey to independence is equally distinct.

Three examples of positive risk-taking in health and social care

Independent Outings: Picture a scenario where a client takes a bus into town to visit a café or shops alone. This not only promotes autonomy but also provides valuable opportunities for social interactions and self-exploration. We don’t take this lightly; we carefully consider potential issues and make preparations like providing an easy-to-use mobile phone or setting aside money for a taxi to ensure safety.

Engaging in physical activities: Physical well-being is crucial to a good quality of life. We encourage our clients to participate in physical activities they enjoy, such as gardening or light exercise. Our caregivers provide the necessary support to make these activities safe and enjoyable, enhancing both physical and mental health.

Cooking experiments: Cooking can be a fulfilling and creative endeavour. We encourage clients to explore this hobby under our guidance, adhering to safety guidelines and supervision. It’s a wonderful way for clients to express themselves, build skills, and savour the satisfaction of a delicious meal.
