Dementia support forum

This evening community event is aimed at helping to support relatives, friends and those directly involved in the care of patients suffering with dementia as well as those patients with an early diagnosis of the syndrome.

Dementia is a common condition that affects about 800,000 people in the UK. The risk of developing dementia increases as people get older, and the condition usually occurs in those over the age of 65. Dementia is a syndrome (a group of related symptoms) associated with an on-going decline of the brain and its abilities. This includes problems with memory loss, thinking speed, mental agility, language, understanding and judgement.

This forum aims to bring together a range of experts, counsellors, carers and specialist support groups, some of whom will briefly present on the different support services that are available to those who care for or are affected by patients suffering with dementia. There will be a number of counselling and support groups on-hand to discuss what services and support are available locally. As with all Connecting Wokingham events, the evening will be informal allowing those attending to ask questions and talk to the experts after the presentations.

• Alzheimer’s society: national charity that is leading the fight against dementia
• Berkshire carers: local charity that provides a support network for carers
• Crossroads care Wokingham: helping carers make a life outside of caring
• T&S support services: 30 years of experience in helping people to live independently
• Home instead senior care: understanding the management and behaviour of dementia patients
• Age UK: advice on managing finances, home adaptations, organisation of care and support, accessing local authorities and more
• Other local charities and support organisations will be on hand
