What is hourly home care?
Hourly home care is provided to people living in their own homes who require additional support with day-to-day life, for example household tasks, personal care, preparing and cooking meals or any other activity that allows them to maintain their independence and quality of life, whilst allowing a family carer looking after a loved one to have a much-needed break to rest and recharge.
There are a range of terms different providers will use to describe hourly care services. Hourly care definitions include domiciliary care, care at home and visiting care, but all refer to the same service – a carer visiting your home at times during the day to provide care and support.
How is hourly care at home provided?
Hourly care from a competent and compassionate visiting carer can be provided from 60-minute visit a day for a minimum of three times per week. Some of our clients will require us to visit more than once a day, sometimes several visits a day, a few or more times a week. Our service is flexible so you can have as many hours as you require to make sure you have the support you need.
If you have complex needs care can be provided over a 24-hour period. Home care can also be provided by us as a live-in care arrangement if a more permanent service is required. For families looking after an adult who needs complex care, for example those looking after an elderly loved one with dementia, we offer flexible respite care at home.
Who is hourly home care for?
If you are living with a condition, illness of disability that impacts your physical or mental ability to live well with independence, hourly visiting care really could help with everyday support to your physical and emotional well-being.
From adults who require support with mobility equipment in and around their home or an individual living with dementia who requires daily assistance with personal care and keeping on top of the housework – we provide high-quality care at home for adults who wish to continue living in their own home.
How hourly care can be used to support your live-in care arrangement
If you are receiving a live-in care service from The Good Care Group and you require extra hourly support to cover the live-in carers’ daily breaks, depending on the area in which you are receiving our service, we can provide an hourly arrangement from our London-based team or our colleagues at Prestige Nursing & Care.
This hourly care service can also be used to support those who have more complex needs, where two carers may be required at certain times of the day to provide the care you need, whether this is during the day or in the evening.

Case study: Enabling Margaret to rehabilitate at home after a fall
Margaret is a 94-year-old lady and lives with hypertension. This means that she is at risk of falling and her limited mobility and frailty impact her condition. When Margaret experienced a significant fall and broke her arm she was admitted to hospital for a long stay. Her family did not want her to go into a residential care home, and as did not live nearby they contacted us to support with hourly care at home.
We put a care and support package in place, that would enable Margaret to get the support she needed with her mobility needs, personal care and domestic tasks that meant she could focus on her rehabilitation. We quickly identified a team of carers that were trained in moving and handling, but who were also aligned to her interest which was important to her family as she was a sociable lady, who at times would get lonely being on her own.
The team worked closely with other healthcare professionals involved in Margaret’s care ensuring a holistic plan of care was created. This included a physiotherapy programme and recovery exercises. The team spent time with Margaret to ensure she had the support she needed to follow the programme.
Gentle encouragement was needed from the team to entice Margaret to complete her physiotherapy programme. This meant she was able to achieve the outcomes required by the healthcare team involved in her care. The team constantly monitored progress, communicating this to others efficiently and she was able to rehabilitate at pace. Slowly, the visits required to support her each day were able to be reduced and she regained much independence. For her family they were reassured that she did not have to move into a care home, but with support could get back on her feet.
Hourly care vs. care home
We know from experience that individuals will prefer to stay in the safety and comfort of their own home instead of moving into a care home or being cared for in a specialist setting. Here we explain the benefits of receiving care at home as opposed to moving away.
- One-to-one care and support – not achievable in even the best care home
- Familiar surroundings for those who are living with conditions like dementia or Parkinson’s or for those receiving nursing care at home is very reassuring
- You can live life as you wish without having to adhere to a programme of daily routines, which is common in most care homes
- If you move into a care home, it is likely that you will have to sell the family home to fund your care home fees instead of keeping the family home where it should be – in the family
- With hourly care at home families have peace of mind that their loved one is safe in their own home with all the care and support they need
- Hourly home care is ideal for couples as they can stay together and not be separated as they are likely to be if both move into a care home. Typically, a couple moving into a care home will have a different bedroom and may not even live in the same part of the home as each other
- If you have a beloved pet, special memories associated with your home, or possessions that could not be taken into a care setting, then hourly home care far outweighs moving into a care home
- When comparing the cost of hourly care at home to becoming a resident in a care home it is very cost effective
Local care management
Our service is highly responsive, and, in most situations, we can implement an hourly care package within 24-hours. Our local care manager will conduct an assessment of your needs so that a comprehensive care plan can be put in place that meets not just your care needs but ensures your preferences and choices are respected. If you are in hospital awaiting discharge or living in another care setting, our experts are able to conduct an assessment to facilitate a speedy return home.
Once you are receiving our hourly care package, we provide on-going support – not just to person receiving care but to all the family to make sure everything is in place and any changes required to are responded to efficiently and effectively.
Hourly care costs
The number of hours our carers visit you and the frequency of visits will determine the overall cost of hourly care, in addition to the level of care you require. When we conduct our assessment, we will be able to confirm the cost of hourly care at home. We then know exactly what is needed so that you have an accurate cost to help with planning and financing the care arrangement.
Local authority funding
As an established provider of funded care packages, we have many years’ experience of working with local authority social care teams. This means we have a strong understanding of the funding that is available and how families can access it, which ensures our reliable care at home service can be put in place smoothly and quickly.
