How does live-in dementia care work?
Live-in dementia care at The Good Care Group is delivered by specially trained dementia carers who possess a deep understanding of the unique challenges posed by different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.
Our expert carers are dedicated to keeping your loved one safe and happy at home. All our carers are expertly trained in how to care for someone living with dementia and use a range of best practice techniques proven to provide reassurance, reduce anxiety and calm behaviours. This compassionate approach reduces the need for the antipsychotic drugs used widely in many care home settings.
We have our own person-centred approach to the delivery of dementia care called EVER, developed, led and supported by our own Consultant Admiral Nurse, Dr Jane Pritchard. This support from an Admiral Nurse, working with leading dementia charity Dementia UK, means we can offer unrivalled levels of emotional and practical support to those living with dementia and their families.
Our bespoke dementia care plans
A care plan acts as a comprehensive roadmap outlining the specific needs of individuals living with dementia and how our care team at The Good Care Group will address those needs.
Through careful assessment and collaboration with the individual, their family, and healthcare professionals, we create a holistic plan encompassing every aspect of the person’s well-being. By meticulously documenting each their unique requirements, preferences, and goals, our bespoke care plans ensure that each of our clients receives tailored and person-centred care.
Care plans play a pivotal role in dementia care by providing a detailed understanding of the person’s condition, history, and individual preferences. They serve as a contractual agreement between The Good Care Group and the individual, ensuring that both parties are aligned in delivering the highest quality of care. Moreover, care plans facilitate consistency, coordination, and accountability in care provision, mitigating the risk of misunderstandings and errors.
By maintaining accurate records of the care provided and the individual’s progress, our care plans enable continuous evaluation and adjustment to optimise health outcomes. Additionally, they ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements, safeguarding the well-being and dignity of those living with dementia under our care.
How live-in care supports people living with dementia
Living with dementia presents unique challenges that can greatly impact an individual’s quality of life and independence. Here’s how our live-in care service offers comprehensive support tailored to the specific needs of people living with dementia:
Care in the comfort of home
For people living with dementia, the familiar surroundings of home hold profound significance. Live-in care preserves this sense of familiarity, allowing individuals to remain in the place where they’ve built treasured memories and established routines.
By staying in their own home environment, people with dementia can maintain a sense of identity and autonomy, which is crucial for both their physical and emotional well-being. Additionally, being surrounded by familiar objects, photographs, pets, and family members provides a sense of security and reassurance, reducing the risk of disorientation and agitation often experienced in unfamiliar settings.
Support for challenging behaviours
Living with dementia can manifest in various behaviours that challenge, including agitation, aggression, or becoming lost. Our highly-trained live-in carers have the expertise to manage these behaviours effectively while providing compassionate and patient support. They are skilled in de-escalation techniques, employing person-centred strategies to create a calm and reassuring environment for our clients with dementia.
By understanding the underlying causes of these behaviours and tailoring their approach accordingly, our carers help minimise distress and enhance the overall well-being of those under their care.
Communication and conversation
Engaging individuals with dementia in meaningful communication and activities is a cornerstone of our live-in care approach. Our live-in carers foster social interaction and cognitive stimulation by initiating conversations, reminiscing about past experiences, or participating in enjoyable hobbies with those under their care.
Our carers are trained in different best practice communication techniques used to build trust and rapport such as mirroring body language and maintaining gentle, close eye contact. By promoting regular communication and interaction, our live-in carers provide companionship and contribute to maintaining cognitive function and emotional well-being, enriching the lives of people with dementia.
Support with personal care
Dressing, grooming, and maintaining personal hygiene may seem like simple tasks, but for individuals with dementia, they can become increasingly challenging. Our dementia live-in carers understand the complexities of self-care and are equipped to provide sensitive and dignified support.
Whether it’s offering discreet reminders, a helping hand, or full assistance with personal care routines, our carers adapt to your loved one’s evolving needs. By ensuring they are appropriately dressed and groomed according to their preferences, our carers help ensure their clients look and feel their best and maintain their dignity and sense of well-being.
Encouraging healthy living
Our live-in carers are dedicated to supporting individuals with dementia in maintaining healthy lifestyle habits. This includes ensuring they have access to nutritious meals, assisting with meal preparation, and encouraging regular exercise tailored to their abilities.
Additionally, our carers promote proper hydration to support overall well-being and vitality. Through their guidance and assistance, people living with dementia can lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
Enhanced safety
With round-the-clock supervision and assistance, live-in carers prioritise the safety and well-being of people living with dementia. Our live-in carers are trained to anticipate and address common safety concerns, including fall prevention and emergency response.
For individuals prone to disorientation but wanting to leave the house alone, or those who experience restlessness, live-in care offers a proactive approach to mitigate risks and ensure a secure living environment. This constant presence and support provide reassurance to both our clients and their families, allowing them to navigate daily life with confidence and peace of mind.
Medication management
Medication management is a crucial aspect of dementia care, as individuals may require multiple medications to manage symptoms and coexisting conditions. Live-in carers play a vital role in ensuring that medication regimens are followed accurately and safely. They assist with medication reminders, administration, and documentation and help individuals adhere to their prescribed schedules and doses.
Our live-in carers monitor for any adverse reactions or changes in condition and can promptly notify healthcare professionals as needed. By overseeing medication management, live-in carers help optimise treatment outcomes, which leads to fewer falls, infections and unnecessary hospital admissions.
Ensuring safe mobility in and around the home
Our in-house Occupational Therapist, Katrina Burns will make a review of a person’s overall ‘function’ to address how they can safely navigate around their home. She will then provide expert guidance and advice on what equipment can improve safe movement and mobility around the home, whilst minimising falls.
Katrina is well placed to provide advice and recommendations as to any home adaptations that may make life easier. She will continue to review a person’s ongoing function to keep them well and safe at home as their condition progresses.
Reablement care
Live-in care promotes independence and reablement, empowering individuals with dementia to participate in activities that enhance their functional abilities and overall quality of life.
Our carers work collaboratively with individuals to identify goals and implement personalised strategies to foster autonomy and self-confidence. Through encouragement and support, individuals can maintain or regain daily living skills, contributing to their sense of purpose and well-being. This proactive approach to care enables individuals to live fulfilling lives in the comfort of their own homes, despite the challenges posed by dementia.
